WHAT'S THE REAL STORY... a creative prompt & coaching tool This week's prompt is inspired by wondering what the real story is -- and why it is so hard to share that truth with others, let alone face the truth ourselves...
Much of my writing and creative prompting has been about learning to live life after the death of a child. But there are so many ways in which we all experience grief. Most recently, my partner and I have been facing a story of no work, no sales, no income, having to ask for food assistance, visit the local foodbank, and get a grant to cover part of our rent. As we roll into another month without enough to cover rent, we are considering once again what it might be like if we have to live in our car for a bit. Part of reaching out for help has resulted in hearing stories of others. Learning there is a small group of people, all living out of their cars, who pool together to park overnight in a group for safety. Learning our foodbank has seen more families this year than they have ever served in their history. Learning of a neighbor trying to get permission from the county to share land space with a friend now living in an RV. But there aren't many "islanders" who are readily sharing these stories. It's made me wonder what the REAL story is. What are the long term financial consequences of living with grief? Grief after death of a child. Grief after loss of a job. Grief after loss of a house. What happens to a community when these stories are hidden out of guilt, shame, fear? How do we find the courage to share our REAL stories? So consider for yourself this week, what is your real story just now? What color is the story you are hiding? Cover a page in that color? What shapes represent the story you are not telling? Add those shapes to the page? What words say something about your story? Add them to the page, too. Collage images in there, too. As you stand back and look at the art of your real story, consider how you would describe it in a show and tell. Feel free to come share the process and results over on MotherHenna.blogspot.com or Kotapress.blogspot.com or over at the MISS Creation Station forum! _____________________________
